How to Straighten Your Hair Everyday Without Damaging It
Buy a Quality Straightener
Just like curling irons and other hair styling tools, hair straighteners come in both high and low qualities.The better quality of straightener you buy, the less time it will take to straighten your hair every day. Some of the higher quality straighteners are made with jewels that will make your hair softer and shinier while other low quality straighteners are just metal and hard on your hair.
Lower quality straighteners also make it so you will have to spend a lot of time on your hair. They do not heat up as high as some of the better ones causing you to have to go over the same piece of hair multiple times. Not only does this repeated action waste time but it also results in stressed hair with split ends from pulling the piece of hair over and over to try to get it straight. It pays off to invest in a high quality straightener that will be better for your hair and save you time when getting ready.
Avoid Overwashing and Drying Out Your Hair
When you wash your hair too often, no matter what you use to style it afterward, you lose natural oils that keep your hair healthy. It is better to hold off on washing your hair for as long as you can in order to keep those oils that your hair needs in order to remain hydrated and to avoid split ends. It is especially bad for your hair to wash it then straighten it every day. The heat from your straightener will already dry your hair out so do not add to the damage by washing your hair every day. If you do so, you will end up with split ends and a lot of breakage.
If you hair gets really oily fast like mine does consider using a dry spray-on, leave-in shampoo. The shampoo is like a powder that will soak up unwanted oils near the roots of your hair and get rid of the greasy look on your hair. I use the Suave brand of spray shampoo and it works great. I can usually go three to four days without washing my hair when I use it.
Other Tips for Hair Straightening
- If you choose to blow dry your hair before straightening it apply some mousse or light gel to it. This makes it so that when you use your blow dryer along with brushing your hair straight, the straightness holds and you will have to spend less time with your hair under the straightener.
- If you have time to shower at night, let your hair dry naturally. Blow drying your hair will dry it out a bit because of the heat. If you can spare your hair by not blow drying it then do so.
- Straighten small chunks of your hair at a time and do so in long, continuous strokes. Leaving the straightener on the same part of your hair for over a few seconds with burn it.
- Use a heat protective spray along with shampoo and conditioner if you can find it. Heat protector also comes in creams. Purchase a high quality heat protector to avoid burning your hair and damaging it.
